With Nicaragua's Educative Forum Eduquemos, SNV will advise in the implementation of the project called “Investing in Human Capital”, an initiative also supported by The Netherlands Embassy planning to encourage more investments in the education sector.

With UNDP, SNV will carry out a study to assess the possibility of developing biogas initiatives in Honduras. The study will help identifying raw materials to produce biogas in different industries and technologies to be applied, defining the uses of biogas, assessing the potential for a carbon market and identifying the financial needs of the industry.
New Guide on best Practices of Inclusive Business in the Palm Oil Sector

SNV in Colombia presents a new "Guíde on Best Practices to Implement Inclusive Businesses in the Palm Oil Sector" (in Spanish).

This publication is based on an evaluation conducted during 2009 by SNV-CECODES, Fedepalma and the USAID/ MIDAS Programme where 22 cases of productive partnerships were analysed in all regions producing palm oil. These partnerships involve more than 20 extractive companies, 90 producers' organisations and 3900 families of small producers of palm oil.

The evaluation revealed the strengths and weaknesses of these partnerships and also showed their performance in production aspects, environment, social impact, commercial activities, organisational capacities, as well as institutional, administrative and financial aspects.

The Guide also uses the experience and procedures used by the Project called "Support to Productive Partnerships" carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural development of Colombia. This publication was financed by USAID.
SNV receives Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy

SNV is one of the six international prize winners at the prestigious Ashden Awards ceremony in London today. More than 150 project contributions were sent in for these awards.

SNV Vietnam was rewarded for its innovation in tackling the twin problem of dangerous cooking practices and untreated animal waste. In partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, SNV launched a programme to convert the waste into energy via biogas digesters. The digesters provide clean, reliable energy for cooking and heating. They also reduce the health and environmental hazards associated with wood fuels, not to mention, the animal waste. Since 2003, over 80,000 systems have been installed, benefitting more than 400,000 people, with CO2 savings of around 167,000 tonnes per year.

The Vietnamese biogas programme is one of the seven domestic biogas programmes SNV supports in Asia. Since 1992, this resulted in 300,000 constructed biogas plants, improving the quality of life of 1.8 million people.
San Francisco--(Business Wire)-- The new study on how technology’s power can transform the lives of the poor has been recently published. W. Robert de Jongh, Regional Director of SNV in Latin America, was one of the experts invited to contribute to the one year-long project.

While it’s understood that technology will shape and possibly revolutionize the futures of developing nations in the years to come, inevitably there will be many new and unforeseen paths and turns throughout the journey. But, without a clearly defined destination, how can organizations devoted to improving living standards and livelihoods throughout the developing world position themselves to identify and spread technologies that improve lives in poor communities?

That is the question that the Rockefeller Foundation asked Global Business Network (GBN), a member of the Monitor Group, to help it explore using scenario planning. On May 25, the results of this year-long collaboration were published in a joint report, titled, “The Future of Technology and International Development.”
SNV participated in the 7th Edition of Expoferia on Corporate Social Responsibility organised by Perú 2021 (the Peruvian chapter of the WBCSD) at the Pontificia University from 2 to 4 June 2010.

In Expoferia, Karime Pávez, SNV Advisor, gave a presentation titled “Knowing a Universe of Opportunities: the Base of the Pyramid". During the presentation Karime analysed how companies traditionally focused their strategies on a small segment of clients saturating the market and how the Base of the Pyramid, the low-income sector earning less than 2 USD a day, is becoming an emergent market with great opportunities for pioneering firms.

Karime also presented the Inclusive Business for Consumers model. This type of Inclusive Business creates win-win relationships between consumers and the companies. Consumers win because they receive a better offering of products and services based on their needs and companies win by selling these products and services to a new large-scale segment of the market.

During the Honduran cultural coffee festival last March, SNV, Café Orgánico Marcala, S. A. (COMSA), the Foundation for Investment and Development of Exports (FIDE) and the Foundation for Rural Enterprise Development (FUNDER) officially launched the first bioethanol plant from coffee waste in Central America. The plant has the capacity to produce 500 litres of ethanol per day and was designed with the technical assistance of EcoEnergy BG using local labour and materials. SNV focuses, through innovative market-based solutions, on improving income and clean energy opportunities for low-income communities.

SNV provides technical advisory services to the programme, based on its three pillars: establishing eco-enterprises, sustainable management of natural resources and poverty reduction in Honduras. The main target of this programme is to increase the competitiveness of coffee companies, generating positive economic, social and environmental impacts. The inauguration event was attended by producers, processing professionals, coffee buyers, public ministries and representatives of FIDE, FUNDER, and Ecoenergy BG.

Continue reading From coffee waste to bioethanol: renewable energy innovation in Central America

Robert de Jongh, Managing Director, SNV in Latin America, on the passing of Coimbatore Krishnarao (known as CK) Prahalad, the Harvey C. Fruehauf Professor of Business Administration at the University of Michigan Business School and a longstanding and outstanding member of WRI’s Board of Directors.

“CK Prahalad was an inspiring thinker and visionary committed to innovative solutions that had the potential to transform the practice of business — relentlessly pursuing that “next practice” through which business could do well by doing good. As one of the father’s of “inclusive business,” Prahalad embodied the wisdom, patience, and intelligence required to catalyse a movement that we as SNV and in his honour, are proud to continue to embrace, advance, strengthen and scale in Latin America and around the world. He will be missed, but his legacy will continue.”
The "training breakfast" will take place in the Communications School of San Martin de Porres' University, Lima, from 8am to 9.30am.

Karime will talk about the potential that this group of low-income people has and how it is becoming an emergent market offering great opportunities to pioneering companies.
Her presentation will focus on Inclusive Businesses with consumers. These initiatives create sustainable and beneficial relationships between consumers and companies.
The challenge is knowing the members of the Base of the pyramid in depth, their habits and behaviours, where do they live, how are they organised, etc. Thanks to that information innovative solutions can be designed and adapted to their reality and their demand.
SNV presents report on "Accountability Initiative"

SNV's "Accountability Initiative" is a pilot developed in three Departments of Bolivia. In Santa Cruz, for example, SNV worked with the Productive Development Secretariat and SEDAG (Department's Service of Agricultural Development). The implementation of the pilot used tools to collect information on baselines, define impact goals and make sure the data was available and transparent. This data collection permitted to achieve accountability targets and enabled the initiative's beneficiaries to compare the goals which had been set to the results obtained.

This pilot improved the relationship between the Departments' authorities and the beneficiaries and opened more interactive channels of communication which in turn improved the positive impact of public investment. Thanks to the success of this initiative SEDAG and SNV will carry on working together in other projects to support the Department's authorities and will continue to improve the living conditions of small producers.

Continue reading SNV presents report on "Accountability Initiative"

The certification of workers that have not had sufficient academic opportunities offers important benefits for the company and the workers alike. For the company it represents an increase in productivity and savings in the manufacturing process. For the worker, the qualification offers better opportunities to increase income and guarantee insertion into the formal labour market.

According to recent data from SNV in Bolivia, the percentage of people who do not count on some form of work qualification totals 70% of the 4.5 million economically active people in the country.
Low-income communities will provide services to this company for the development of biofuels.

This proposal envisages the use on the part of the company of 10,684 hectares of fallow land set aside for the cultivation of sugar cane used to produce automotive ethanol. The company has anticipated that 90 agricultural workers coming from the low-income sector will be employed in growing the sugar cane, benefiting from a tailored curricular programme. For this, a Higher Technological Institute has been identified to help SNV develop the proposed curricular programme. At this stage of the proposal, it is envisaged that services will be contracted to micro- and small-sized enterprises at the construction stage in addition to production and the commercial link-up phase.

The enterprise strategy proposed by SNV will allow the generation of employment and improve the income of people at the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) in Central America in line with SNV objectives, as well as satisfying the basic needs of low-income communities. The programme has much potential, and represents a good opportunity for replication and up-scaling at regional level.

An important business strategy when incorporating the Base of the Pyramid (BoP) within company value chains is to build capacity in the low-income sector. To achieve this objective, SNV has designed the iVentures investment fund as a mechanism through which to create financial incentives that allow financing for the development of local capacities, so that the BoP can establish sustainable commercial relationships with businesses.
